the programme
Music Production offers a study programme in which you train to become an innovative, creative and multidisciplinary studio technician and music producer. You are encouraged to explore boundaries and to apply modern production techniques to many different musical genres. At your graduation you will know everything about the latest developments in music technology.
Codarts, University for the Arts offers a unique educational environment, allowing you to explore the great variety of musical genres within Codarts: jazz, pop, world music, classical music and music theatre. Students of Music Production play an important role in both studio and location recordings of ensembles within the Rotterdam Conservatoire. You will already gain considerable experience with recording techniques and sound amplification during your study.
Knowledge and skills relating to music technology are heavily emphasized, but pure musical knowledge is of crucial importance too for modern music producers. Classes in music theory as well as an instrumental minor therefore form essential elements in the study programme. Besides the major courses, there are also practice-oriented minors in media technology and production.
The Music Production programme is very much oriented towards the professional practice. Many lessons take the form of practice-oriented sessions and presentations involving evaluation by both teachers and fellow students, stimulating a critical and analytical listening attitude, while you study. This method will also help you learn to articulate the most wide-ranging musical and audio technical problems.
There are regular workshops with leading producers and musicians from both the Netherlands and abroad. During the academic year 2006-2007, Shell Schellekens (producer of Golden Earring) and Mike Garson (composer, and keyboard player for David Bowie and the Smashing Pumpkins) were guest teachers in Rotterdam.
